Blast The Hindrance Mission
June 20-28, 2009
In Spring 2009 Corner of Love invited people to do away with whatever
hindered them from being part of an international mission and 39 willing
individuals accepted! What a great mission it was!
Thirty nine team members made up the international group, which included
Dr. Diane Gilbert Bradley, MD (Boca Raton, FL), Dr. Robert Harry, DDS
(Tucson, AZ) and others from Washington, California, Arizona, Florida, New
Hampshire, and Southampton, Bermuda, U.K.
Approximately 500 children received shoes and clothing from the group and
1791 patients and their families were treated during three days of mobile
medical clinics. In all, approximately 4,550 people were served by the team
through various ministry activities with help from Nicaraguan physicians
and other native volunteers.
The "Blast The Hindrance Mission" team ventured further out than previous
trips, reaching "Hacienda San Francisco" farm in Pena Blanca, almost four
hours away from Corner of Love's headquarters in San Ramón. This
was the first time Corner of Love ever brought a team so far out that it
was necessary to sleep in a village. With the dormitory building complete
in San Ramon, it was a remarkable first, using "Quinta El Misionero" as a
launching pad for overnight missions.
Others projects tackled by the June team included a Community Garden that
will provide fruit and vegetables for the Family Sponsorship participants,
financial donations for improvements to water systems in Sabana Grande and
San Pablo, and support for David's Peace Chapel at Quinta El Misionero.
Another highlight of the trip included an important meeting for Corner of
Love's Executive Director, Tanya Mroczek Amador with U.S. Ambassador
Robert Callahan on June 18, 2009 in Matagalpa. The two met and discussed
Corner of Love's future, which includes plans to break ground on a Medical
Clinic and Leadership School in a small village outside of San Ramón in
the coming year. Ambassador Callahan, a U.S. Diplomat since 1978, said he
was very impressed with the work being done by Corner of Love and looks
forward to seeing what the future holds for the organization and the
people it helps.
A special little girl, named "Esmilse" touched the hearts of
many Blast The Hindrance team members while serving at Hacienda San
Francisco. To hear her story, click here:

By His Spirit Medical-Dental-Vision Brigade Serves over 10,000
People in Need in Nicaragua
Corner of Love's annual Medical-Dental Brigade (Feb. 24-Mar. 5) this year
included Optometry services and treated a record number of patients
in Nicaragua. The team of doctors, dentists, nurses, and volunteers
from all over the United States, Canada, and Japan distributed over
8,000 lbs of medicine and donations in impoverished villages North
of San Ramón, where Corner of Love's headquarters are located.
120 individuals, including the 78 who traveled via air and 42
Nicaraguan nationals broke into seven smaller teams in order to
visit different villages every day. These teams included three
General Medical Teams, two Dentistry Teams, a Mobile Vision Team,
and a Construction Team. Each day the teams left on separate buses
(or trucks) to treat 10,347 patients in all in the Northern Nicaragua
villages of Pueblo Viejo, Wabule, Samulalis, La Corona, San Pablo,
Finca La Florida, Wasimon, Cerro Grande, Selva Negra, and others,
as well as the town of San Ramón.
Volunteer doctors Richard Quinn (DDS), Michael Campbell (DDS),
Luther Frerichs (MD), Jim Clark (MD), Kirby Lautman (MD), Patrick
McKenzie (DDS), Jason McGonegle (DDS), Gail Kautzman (DDS),
John Bergstrom (DDS), and Paul Shepherd (Optometrist) worked
together with practitioners, nurses, and more helping hands to
reach families that live on less than $1 US per day in the remote
villages. Services received by the patients included medical
treatment with prescription and over-the-counter meds, vision
screening with complimentary eyeglasses and ophthalmic meds, and
dental services, such as extractions, restorative procedures, and
fluoride treatments.
"Support from friends all over the U.S. help us reach large
numbers of people in need," said Tanya Mroczek-Amador, Executive
Director of Corner of Love. "We are so appreciative of the support
coming from Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts, civic groups, churches, and
individuals for our clinics. I want to extend a huge Thank
You! to everyone who donated funds to purchase med-packs and
supplies. You make this work happen!" People who receive services
from Corner of Love live in extreme poverty in North Nicaragua.
Most walk for many miles to be seen and lack shoes, potable water,
and other basics that so many of us take for granted.
The group was accompanied by seven pastors of all different
Christian denominations and helped inaugurate Corner of Love's new
dormitory, called "Quinta El Misionero" on Sunday, March
1st. The new facility can sleep as many as 125 team members and
is 18,000 square feet in size, including a pharmacy, chapel,
meeting room, men's and women's dorms, and large eating area.

See Greater Things Mission

Taking Steps Towards The Bigger Vision . . .
The
"See Greater Things Mission" to Nicaragua was a truly FANTASTIC trip!
With team-members from Arizona, Florida, and Washington, Corner of Love Ministries served
a huge population of people in need and lovingly fitted over 200 children with school shoes
and a new chance on life. In Nicaragua children must own a pair of shoes in order to enroll
in the public education system. That means that children who are barefoot are left out,
without the chance to learn.
Four Nicaraguan physicians, including three who are new to Corner of Love, also helped
the "See Greater Things" team carry out three days of medical clinics in San
Ramón, El Jobo, and Selva Negra.
At Selva Negra, Corner of Love worked on the grounds of one of Nicaragua's largest
coffee farms, situated near Jinotega.
Jinotega
is one of the coldest, wettest areas of Nicaragua. Over 2,000 people live on
the Selva Negra coffee plantation and many suffer from respiratory infections, asthma,
malnutrition, and horrible skin conditions that result from bathing in surface water
and contaminated streams. In this location, an overwhelming number of patients presented
with serious ailments, such as pneumonia and mountain leprosy. Corner of Love treated
nearly half of the residents there on June 26th and promised to return. The Selva
Negra clinic was viewed as the most in-need place of service that our teams had ever
visited since we began doing mission work in Nicaragua eight years ago.
The June mission
took many steps towards fulfilling the bigger vision of Corner of
Love, which involves recruiting, training, and equipping Nicaraguan nationals to care
for their people when teams are not present. New Nicaraguan doctors and volunteers
made commitments to future medical-dental brigades and village coordinators were
chosen for upcoming training sessions that will enable residents in the mountain
communities to oversee small "farmacias" stocked with the most needed meds.
"My
practice is in the capital," said Dr. Jose Sasiga, Medical Doctor
and Surgeon of UNAN Managua. "I have always wanted to come and help people in
the poor villages like this, but Managua is a long way from here and my days are so
busy. To some extent, I have been very removed from the reality of poverty in my own
country. My experiences on this mission trip opened my eyes to all of the things I
CAN DO for my people. I will be back to work with Corner of Love! I will be back to
serve God here again and again and to lend help whenever I can." Dr. Sasiga went
on to say that he looks forward to the mission's plans to open a Medical Clinic in
San Ramón, and that he hopes to get other colleagues involved who'll staff the
mission clinic on a volunteer basis.
In Spring 2008, the 39 missionaries that traveled on the team sold "Nica
Dinners" (authentic Nicaraguan-style dinners prepared by volunteers) and helped
raise funds to purchase the medicine and supplies for the clinics, as well as purchase
the school shoes for the needy children. Team members came from seven churches that
span the U.S. and although distance separated them during the planning of the trip,
a common goal of making a big impact in the lives of many united them once they
were all together in San Ramón.
In all, roughly 3,000 people were helped by the team and many who made the trip
not only described it as a "mountain-top experience," but as a journey
that helped them "see greater things" for their own life, as well.

Care to Bless Medical-Dental
Brigade
¡Que Benedicion! Corner
of Love's annual Medical-Dental Brigade to Nicaragua was
a huge blessing for those who received care in North Nicaragua
as well as those who served on the "Care To Bless" Team.
Before leaving Seattle, the group collected and packed
almost 6,000 lbs of medicine and supplies, including 7,000
treatments of Mebendazole, a "wonder drug" that
is an anti-parasite medicine for people with waterborne
illnesses, which are terribly prevalent in the villages
that surround San Ramón.
Ninety individuals, including 53 from the U.S. and 37
from Nicaragua broke into three teams to staff village
clinics and Corner of Love's new dental office in San
Ramón. Each day the teams left on separate buses and patients
were seen in El Carrizo, Samulalis, El Jobo, El Horno
#2, La Corona, and Wabule.
|
 |
With three Nicaraguan doctors serving
as volunteers, as well as two MD's and three dentists from Washington,
the Care To Bless Team was able to give treatment to 4,988 medical
patients and 176 dental patients. Sue Quinn, RDH also lead a
small team of volunteers that blessed 674 children with fluoride
treatments and dental hygiene instruction. And many hands were
also needed in the village pharmacies - 22,473 prescriptions
were filled!
Trip leaders and missionaries rejoiced at the opportunity to
house the team in Corner of Love's new dormitory for the very
first time! This enabled the Care To Bless Brigade to meet and
pray together each morning and encourage eachother for the long
day ahead.
One of the biggest blessings of the trip was meeting Baby Hillary,
who
has a massive tumor on her face and might possibly be able to
travel to the Seattle area for help or begin treatment in Central
America. And, for the first time, other "special case" patients
received aid so they could get to Matagalpa or Managua for various
treatments.
Looking back at the effort and drive that each team-member
brought to this brigade, it gives pleasure to see how much was
done! Seven villages were wonderfully served by an amazing team
(of Nicaraguans and Americans) that cared enough to leave their
homes and families to bless them. What an act of love! What
an awesome mission!

No Idle Hands on June 2007 Mission
Corner of Love's annual People to People trip this year
was in need of 50 volunteers who would lend their hands
to work towards some big objectives in Nicaragua. But
the "Hundred Hands Mission" ended up with even more willing
servants than that!
The team of 57 missionaries was made up of 39 individuals
from the US and 18 Nicaraguans, and carried out three
days of Medical Clinic (which also offered fluoride treatments
and teeth brushing instruction), a School Shoes event,
and several construction projects at Corner of Love's
new dormitory that is being built in San Ramón.
|
The Hundred Hands missionaries broke into three groups to
staff the medical clinic, work on the electrical wiring (led
by Chuck Bergeson) and lay the sub-floor (led by Jon Langston)
at the dorm. In Sabaña Grande, a large village about
70 minutes North of San Ramón, the team saw approximately
375 patients and a total of 2,990 prescriptions were filled
during the eight day mission.
No hands were idle with tons of tasks like sorting pills, filling bags, fitting shoes, running wires, and fitting the sections of concrete floor boards on the upper floor of the dormitory.
Perhaps the most special event for the team-members was the distribution of over 150 pairs of shiny black, school shoes to Nicaraguan children in need. Many of the students came barefoot to receive their pair and the gratitude shown by them and their parents brought tears to most who served as shoe fitters. "I stopped attending school in April (the Nicaraguan school year runs from Feb. to Nov.) because I had no shoes," said Elias Rodriguez, a young boy who received shoes and was fitted by Nelson Amador, "Now I am so happy that I can go back! I can't wait to go and tell my teacher!"
Thank you to all of you who prayed for the team, provided medicine, funds, and shoes. Nuestras manos (our hands) touched thousands and it was a privilege to be the hands and feet of Christ in a land so rich in faith, but so in need of care.

February 9-17, 2007
¡Gloria a Dios! Corner of Love’s
“Compassion of Christ Brigade” had a wonderful,
successful trip! Fifty-four missionaries, including 34
from the US and 20 from Nicaragua, completed five days
of clinic in San Ramón and the surrounding villages. The
group was made up of three doctors, five nurses, two
dentists and a large supporting staff of dental
assistants, interpreters, and volunteers. All these
individuals helped set-up and tear down day clinics in
San Ramón and rural villages nearby, mobilizing the
temporary pharmacy and medical/dental stations each day.
Nearly 4,000 people received medicine from the
Compassion of Christ team in San Ramón, El Naranjo, La
Corona, Wabule, Wasimon, El Horno, and El Carrizo.
Serving with many from the Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Nicaragua, Compassion of Christ Brigade distributed a
record number of over-the-counter items and
prescriptions in North Nicaragua, where families live on
less than $1 per day and struggle to provide for their
children’s basic needs, like drinking water and shoes.
This hard work came with countless rewards, as
team-members from two distinct cultures formed
friendships and experienced the life-changing effects of
laboring to show the Compassion of Christ –
together.

LOVE SO BIG! MISSION
June 22-29, 2006
Thirteen missionaries from
Mt.
Si Lutheran,
Shepherd
of the Valley, and
Trinity Lutheran of Enumclaw worked alongside fifteen
Nicaraguan volunteers to carry out the LOVE SO BIG!
Mission in June 2006. This group, which included Dr. Duane
Anderson and Julie Todd, L.P.N. carried out three days of
rural medical clinics in San Ramón, Buena Vista, and El
Horno, with the help of Dr. Ruiz, a Nicaraguan physician
from Managua. The team saw approximately 650 patients and
filled over 1,000 prescriptions from the 1500 lbs of cargo
they transported to Nicaragua. They also held a Children’s
Convention in La Corona, where 500 children participated
in bible lessons and songs and received donations of washcloths,
soap, children’s meds and vitamins, children's underwear,
and toys.

Missionaries from eight Washington State
churches traveled to Nicaragua February 9-18, 2006 as part
of Corner of Love Ministries third annual
Medical / Dental Brigade.
This year's brigade, called "Healing In His Name" consisted
of two dentists, and assisting dental staff, one US doctor,
one Nicaraguan doctor, one nurse practitioner and a large
supporting staff of nurses, interpreters and volunteers.
Forty nine people, including several Nicaraguans from the
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Nicaragua led by Reverend
Pavel Guevara, traveled to remote villages in North Nicaragua
where people brave life in the most impoverished area of
the country and only one in 53 households has potable water.
During the trip, clinics were held in San Ramón, El Jobo,
Yucúl, and Wasimón and over 4,000 prescriptions were filled
and 4,500 lbs of medicine and toiletries were distributed.

Missionaries from
Trinity Lutheran Church of Lynnwood and
Shepherd
of the Valley of Maple Valley made up a small group
of missionaries who traveled to San Ramón on "God's Villages
Mission." A children's convention was held in La Reyna where
the group distributed nearly 500 bags full of toys, washcloths,
soap, shampoo, combs and other items to small children.
Home visits were also made to families receiving aid through
Corner of Love’s
Live
to Learn Program and for the first time ever, a Lutheran
service was held in San Ramón, offered by Pastor Carlos
Pavel Guevara, Reverend and President of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Nicaragua.

Good Medicine Brigade brought many individuals
together to fulfill another 8 day medical mission to Nicaragua
Feb. 8-16, 2005. A two day clinic was held in San Ramón
and the team journeyed out to three villages: Yucúl, Wasimón,
and El Jobo by bus, to offer medical and dental services
in these rural communities. Sharing gifts of the spirit
and 2500 lbs of medicine, vitamins, and toiletries, the
group of 18 (and countless Nicaraguan volunteers) managed
to set-up and tear down 2 medical exam areas, 4 dental stations,
tri-age interview post, and pharmacy, each day they served.

In June of 2004, Twenty-three missionaries
witnessed the drilling of a well at the building built by
Shepherd
of the Valley for the Catholic Parish across from the
town’s park and church, painted the interior of that building
and opened a pre-school there, called, "Los Amiguitos."
Little ones at the new pre-school were supplied with uniforms,
school supplies, and shoes. The group also carried out two
days of nutrition clinics, distributing vitamins, clothing,
and toiletry items to over 600 people in need. Backpacks
were also provided for children and youth involved in programs
at that facility and the missionaries participated in worship
at San Ramón's Catholic church. Prior to the arrival of
the entire team, Nelson and Tanya Amador, together with
James and Yohanan Rempt, also helped a native Nicaraguan
doctor and dentist carry out two days of medical/dental
clinics in Wasimon.

In February 2004, ten missionaries laid
the ground work for future medical/dental brigades by carrying
out three days of clinic in San Ramón and providing the
first aid to townspeople through a temporary clinic setting.
Connections were made with the Nicaraguan Minister of Health
and the Matagalpa Health Department that would later facilitate
Corner of Love’s expansion of services like these and help
establish the ministry as a routine provider of healthcare
people in North Nicaragua. A book drive, held by Emily Lewis
(of Maple Valley, WA) prior to the team's departure also
allowed the missionaries to gift almost 300 books to the
children of San Ramón.

After constructing a 3,200 square foot
building on land donated to the Catholic Church of San Ramón
by Eulalia and Anita Castro in the 1970's, members of
Shepherd
of the Valley (and two from Maple Valley Presbyterian
Church) visited San Ramón to plan and enjoy an Inauguration
Celebration with the townspeople. A large group of missionaries
spent 8 days installing fixtures, assembling cabinets, and
building dividing walls inside the building that was blessed
on June 22, 2003. Over 500 children participated in a bible
lesson and craft in the new building and a children's convention
was held in La Laguna, where missionaries offered a piñata
and prayed with small children and their families that attended.
New Building

Old Building

June 2002
Tanya Amador and Pastor David Sorensen accompanied a small
construction team to San Ramón in June of 2002. The group
planned to tackle the electrical wiring of the building
being constructed for use as a Soup Kitchen. (The feeding
program later took off in the form of a pre-school.) Together,
the six missionaries made huge strides completing the building,
installing vinyl windows, pipes, conduit, and the electrical
panel. They also visited chapels in La Corona, Sabana Grande,
and Buena Vista, compiling needs and ideas for how Corner
of Love Ministries might help Christians in those villages
with learning materials and other resources.
May 2001
Nelson & Tanya Amador traveled to Nicaragua and met with
church leaders to discuss Corner of Love's plans to build a Pre-School
& Soup Kitchen and begin leading groups to serve in San Ramón.
May 2000
The idea to begin a mission in Nicaragua was born.
The name "Corner of Love" was chosen to reflect the special corner of the
world (in Nicaragua), for which the founders have so much love.
1993-1999
Nelson & Tanya Amador traveled each year to Nicaragua to
visit family and brought jeans, children's clothing, and other donations,
which were distributed in the Family Store.
